OK, so it’s a new year and you’re still single. If you’ve made a new year’s resolution that 2008 will be the year of romance, it might be time to sit down, take a cold hard look at your life, and consider if you need to make some changes in order to get into a relationship.
There’s no room for superficiality in a genuine loving relationship, but it’s a cruel fact of life that appearances count. Do a stock take of your wardrobe. Is it time to buy some new clothes? What about your hair? By dressing well and making an effort with your appearance, not only will you attract people’s attention, but you’ll feel more confident about yourself.
I’m not recommending any lengthy daily beauty regime or spending thousands of dollars on the latest fashions. But a little sprucing up can make a world of difference. If you’re sartorially challenged, don’t be afraid to ask a stylish friend for some advice.
Unfortunately it’s very unlikely that your fantasy lover will just walk into your life. You have to make an effort to go out there and meet them. As the famous sex columnist Xavier Hollander once quipped: “If you want to go duck hunting, you’ve gotta go where the ducks are.” I’m not suggesting you should start haunting the local singles bar, but you have to put yourself out there and start meeting people.
Make a commitment to yourself to attend more social events, as many as you can. Be open to everyone and everything. Remember one of the best sources of dating fodder is friends of your friends and work colleagues. Take the initiative and organise gatherings: movies, barbecues, dinners, video nights, bowling, drive-ins, sailing days, picnics, theatre, after work drinks…whatever takes your fancy.
And last but not least, if you meet someone who you like, even if you’re not completely sure about them, don’t miss the opportunity to get their phone number. You may never see them again, and might end up dearly regretting your lack of courage.
