fishing2.jpgWhat fisherman doesn’t want to catch more fish on their next fishing trip? It seems to me, most anyone who spends time fishing would like to catch more and bigger fish, so in this article I’m going to provide you with some practical tips that will help you catch more fish the next time you go fishing. These tips have been proven through years of experience, and are mainly for those anglers who like to fish the flowing waters of small rivers and streams (although the tips can also be employed most bodies of water).

The first tip is to pay attention to your gear. There are few things that affect bite rates like your gear, specifically your rod, reel, and line. That’s why I suggest using ultra light rods and reels, spooled with line no heavier than six-pound test for small river and stream fishing. Many anglers use gear and line that’s much too heavy for fishing in these types of waterways. Keep it light, and your bite rates will be much better. I personally use four-pound test, but six-pound test is passable.

Next, always pay attention to your hands (especially if you’re a live bait angler). Any scents that are on your hands will transfer to your bait, and if that scent is unnatural, fish are much less apt to bite. Some examples of common scents that cause problems are nicotine and/or gasoline. The remedy to this problem is to grab a handful of dirt or grass before baiting up, and rubbing it into your hands. This simple tip will eliminate any unnatural scents that may be on your hands.

The next tip is to always pay attention to the weather and moon, and then use this information to your advantage. The weather and moon have as much to do with you catching fish as the type of bait you’re using. Did you know that? Well, it’s true, so you always want to pay attention to these two forces of Mother Nature. Take an hour or so, and learn how the weather and moon impact fishing, you’ll be glad you did.

If you fish with live worms, like most anglers do, then you need to be using gang hooks. Gang hooks are the most effective and natural way to present a live worm as bait. Most people simply “thread” a live worm onto a single hook, and call it good. This is a big mistake. Live worms need to be presented in a natural manner, which means outstretched, the way God intended. That’s why having pre-tied gang hooks with you while worm fishing is so important. Gang hooks will help you catch more fish on your next fishing trip, its as simple as that.

Keep these simple tips in mind on your next fishing trip, and you will have a ton more success. Your bite rates will increase dramatically. The hooking of the fish is still up to you (obviously), but these tips will results in you getting more bites, and like I said earlier, who can argue with that?
